Andrew Young

One moment that was really impactful for me was when Andrew Young taught us a song. It was the same song he’d song while marching in Florida during the civil rights movement.

We were in church, sitting in the pews, and he was facing us. He sang the first verse alone and then we joined in. It went:

I love everybody, I love everybody, I love everybody in my heart.

And then all of us sang with him. 50-some years ago he had sang that exact song and the voices alongside him were the other people marching bravely past the KKK members shouting threats at them. And now in 2019 the same man who marched then was singing, his voice alongside ours. The sound echoed around the church.

That was really affecting for me because it was like we were singing through time. Like we were singing with those marchers  decades ago and Andrew Young was the bridge connected us with them, since he had been in both places.
